Book Review 33: Songs Of Cauvery by Kalyanraman Durgadas.





'Songs of Cauvery' by Kalyanraman Durgadas is a beautiful book. Set in the pre-independence era, this book brings to light the actual condition of the times. The transition years between the nineteenth and the twentieth century was a time which was both politically and socially unstable.

The story takes place in the fertile delta of the River Cauvery, in the town of Tiruvaiyaru, South India. Panju is a brilliant boy, who belongs to a Brahmin family. When he grows up, he decides to join the freedom movement. His sister, Janaki, was very fond of reading and had within her the quest for knowledge. She went against age-old traditions and continued her education. She became the only woman from her district to study in a college. 
To know more about what happens in the lives of Panju and his sister Janaki, you have to read the book.

The vivid chronicled descriptions make this book unputdownable and absolutely interesting. The plot is very well constructed. The chronological narration is another plus point of this book. The use of lucid language and short chapters make this book a great read. The characters are well portrayed, especially, I liked how the female characters are given importance and how they contribute to the novel. The pace at which the story flowed was perfect.

Overall, the book is absolutely worth reading. And I personally enjoyed reading this book and loved it.

If you are interested in knowing about the social, cultural, and political conditions of the pre-independence era, or like reading historical fiction, this book is for you.

Satyayoddha Kalki: Eye of Brahma is the second book of the Kalki Series by Kevin Missal. The first book Dharmayoddha Kalki was quite interesting. The second part is no less than the first one. It's equally good. After I completed the first book, I was very eager to read the second book of the series.
