Book Review 4: The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon.

Nicola Yoon, a Jamaican-American author, pens a beautiful and deeply moving love story, 'The Sun Is Also A Star'. This is her second book after 'Everything Everything'. The novel is fast paced, has a unique narrative and is a perfect blend of science, philosophy, and emotions. The main theme on focus is the adversities faced by the illegal immigrants in the United States of America. The whole story takes place during a single day in the New York City.

'The Sun Is Also A Star' is a contemporary novel spun around the lives of the protagonists, Natasha Kingsley and Daniel Jae Ho Bae. Natasha is a 17 year old Jamaican-American girl, who, as we see in the story, has to leave the US. Because of her father's DUI, they only have 12 hours left in the States before being deported to Jamaica. Daniel, on the other hand, is a Korean-American guy who wants to be a poet, but due to parental pressure has to get admission in the Yale and pursue medicine as a career. Natasha believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Daniel is hopelessly romantic and believes in fate. Natasha and Daniel unexpectedly bumps into each other at a music store and the later ends up following her around NY. Daniel feels that he is attracted to Natasha and believes it to be 'love at first sight'. However, Natasha does not want to get more distracted as her life was already messed up and tries to brush off her feelings. But Daniel is determined to get Natasha fall in love with him. And Natasha, however hard she tries to stop herself from losing her heart, ends up falling for him. But although fate coincidentally made them end up together, there was something in else in store for them, which leave the readers heart-broken.

This young-adult fiction has a beautiful style of narration. The chapters reflect point of view of the different characters alternatively. There are also chapters in between which tell the readers about scientific facts, historical details and etymology of various topics related to the story.

The novel  focuses on parent-child relationships and also on racial differences. The characters are well portrayed and every relationship has been described quite well.

However, I personally did not quite love the book and found few things a bit hard to digest. The way Daniel wanted Natasha, a complete stranger to instantly fall with him and he also falling for her instantly is somewhat unrealistic. Falling in love with a complete stranger that too in a single day is fanciful. Also, the ending of the novel also failed to affect me. To be true, this young-adult novel did not meet my expectations.
The cover art is beautiful and the book cover really looks amazing!
