Book Review 111: The Sword of Kalki by Abhishek K.S.

The Sword of Kalki, which is the first book in the Kalyug series, is an interesting read which combines both the genres - mythology and teenage drama.

The protagonist - Reyansh, aka Rey, is a 17-year-old student, who does not believe in the mythological tales of the Gods and Goddesses. Although he grew up listening to mythological stories, he does not believe in them. But his life takes a turn when he arrives at Guru Parshuram's Ashram. As the story progresses, he realizes that the asurs and the devas are indeed real and he comes from a long line of one of the devas himself.

This is the author's debut novel. The plot was very well developed, and it was quite unpredictable. This book is a perfect combination of mythology, drama, action, adventure and comedy as well. There are a number of humorous instances in the book. It was a really fascinating read and has the ability to keep the readers hooked till the very end. However, the narrative technique could have been better.

Although there has recently been a lot of mythological fictions which focus on Kalki, this book is quite different.

Overall, it was an enjoyable read.

About the author: Abhishek Naidu, a scientist by profession, is a proud bibliophile. He has been working as a scientist at the Bureau of Indian Standards since the age of 21. He loves playing sports and writing songs as much as he likes science and creating stories.

This is his first novel and he has plans for a lot more. He will continue to write if his work is loved by people, and if it isn’t loved, then he will continue to write with even more vigour till people fall in love with his stories.  He is deeply in love with nature and has held various programs and seminars to create awareness regarding the protection of nature. He loves debating about the environment, though that could also be due to his general love for debates. He currently lives in Hubli, Karnataka, courtesy his profession.
